Lack of blood supply is effecting the treatment adversely as sources are drying up and the volunteers do not realize their moral and national duty to donate for life saving of these needy patients who cannot live unless fresh screened blood in administered to them on regular basis. Those blessed with the gift of normal health by the God Almighty should not forget these unfortunate needing their help. It should be emphasized by the parents and teachers that an odd donation in no way adversely effects a healthy body, rather it improves the health.
The Preventive programme also needs active support. The need to prevent marriages of the carries has to be emphasized. Blood tests to detect carriers are now easily available and the youth should utilize it before getting into wedlock. This is only way to stop the rapid spread of the disease in the country and has been utilized for its eradication by several advanced countries. Parents of Thalassaemic patients should get their future pregnancies tested by chorionic villi sampling to determine if the foetus is normal or diseased, within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Our aim is to restrict the spread of the disease and eventually eradicate it from the country.
